JANUARY 26, 2001

The President of the North Dakota Board of Higher Education said the board won't reconsider its vote to keep the "Fighting Sioux" nickname of the University of North Dakota.

William Isaacson also said the school has done a lot to support diversity. School President Charles Kupchella said the university is one of the country's "leading institutions" in terms of supporting Native American students.

Most Native American students oppose the name.

Meanwhile, a new logo for the school, which is an Indian head, will be slightly changed before it can be approved for licensing. Ben Brien, a Native American artist, designed the logo.
