MAY 1, 2000 The Pit in Albuquerque, New Mexico became the temporary home to North America's largest powwow this past weekend, the 17th Annual Gathering of Nations.

The busiest day of Gathering, however, came Saturday. Even though high winds temporarily closed the artisans tent, the crowds kept turning out. The day got off to a rockin' start with a special performance by Kickapoo/Creek singer Arigon Starr, currently promoting her sophmore effort Wind-Up. Gathering also said goodbye Saturday to the outgoing Miss Indian World. Gathering goers lined up to get a glimpse and shake hands with Gore, in town on a campaign stop. But the night didn't end there. Gathering kept going until after 3am on Sunday morning, proving that Indian Country couldn't let such an exciting weekend end so easily. There's always next year... |
