Couple asks court to declare land Indian Country

WEDNESDAY, JULY 9, 2003 An Iowa couple asked a federal court to declare a four-acre parcel of land to be free form state and local jurisdiction, saying it is owned by the Little Shell Pembina Band of North America. The couple has been engaged in a lengthy battle with officials in Iowa over their property, which is reportedly riddled with garbage. The Little Shell band is not federally recognized and was recently cited in North Dakota for issuing illegal driver's licenses, vehicle registration and insurance coverage. Get the Story:
