MONDAY, JULY 7, 2003

Twelve Oklahoma tribes have rejected a tobacco compact proposed by the state.

Existing compacts call for the tribes to pay 25 percent of the state's cigarette tax, which currently amounts to 23 cents. The new proposal would require the tribes to pay 50 percent into a state trust fund.

If the tribes refuse the compact, they would be forced to pay 75 percent of the state tax.
