WEDNESDAY, JUNE 11, 2003 The General Accounting Office (GAO) on Tuesday released a report critical of Janet Rehnquist, the former inspector general at the Department of Health and Human Services who stepped down June 1. The report said Rehnquist, the daughter of Supreme Court Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist, "created the perception that she lacked appropriate independence in certain situations." It further stated that she "exhibited serious lapses in judgment that further troubled many OIG staff." Examples cited by GAO include Rehnquist's commission of a firearm, which she kept in her office; a decision to delay an audit of the state of Florida's retirement system; and her intervention in matters that involved friends. Rehnquist defended her record in an interview with The Washington Post. She said she recovered more money in audits than in previous years. Get the Story:
