Parties bow out of suit challenging river flows

FRIDAY, JUNE 6, 2003 Two parties have dropped support for a lawsuit challenging a Department of Interior decision to restore flows in the Trinity River of northern California. Former Secretary Bruce Babbitt in late 2000 restored waters in order to fulfill treaty and trust obligations to the Hoopa Valley Tribe and the Yurok Tribe. The tribes depend on fish for cultural and subsistence purposes. The Palo Alto City Council voted 5-4 to drop support while the Sacramento Municipal Utilities District withdrew altogether.
