Tribes oppose bill to limit hydropower reviews

THURSDAY, JUNE 5, 2003 Tribal leaders from the Northwest said legislation to limit environmental review of hydroelectric power projects will infringe on their treaty and land rights. Sen. Larry E. Craig (R-Idaho) drafted the bill. It prevents tribes and environmentalists from challenging approval of dam projects while allowing dam operators the ability to dispute conditions imposed on them. Sens. Dan Inouye (D-Hawaii) and Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.) are introducing an amendment to counteract Craig's measure. Get the Story:
