Norton asked to limit travel by DOI employees

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 4, 2003 The National Park Service is sending 16 officials to the 5th World Park Congress in Durban, South Africa, this September, Al Kamen of The Washington Post reports. The travel costs have the leaders of the House Interior Appropriations subcommittee worried, Kamen writes. In a letter to Secretary Gale Norton, they said they were "amazed to learn about the large number of individuals who work for you that plan to take this trip to South Africa." November appears to be a busy travel month for DOI. About 400 employees have signed up to attend a "multi-agency partnership conference" in Los Angeles the same month, Kamen reported. Originally, 800 asked to go but Norton cut down the number after the House subcommittee complained. Get the Story:
