Nez Perce woman overcomes obstacles to graduate

TUESDAY, MAY 13, 2003 Glenyce Fortin, a mother of six, graduated from Washington State University with a degree in civil engineering. For Fortin, a member of the Nez Perce Tribe of Idaho, obtaining the degree took some effort. After enrolling in college years ago, she put off her educational plans to raise a family. More recently, she lost her father and her husband. Fortin says the experience has prompted her to serve as a mentor for young Natives. "There has to be some of us who do make a difference," she told The Seattle Post-Intelligencer. "There has to be people who go between the two worlds, so people who choose to stay at home on the reservation don't have to rely on outsiders." Get the Story:
