Cross-deputization proposed on Crow Reservation

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 23, 2003 Law enforcement duties would be shared among tribal, state and federal governments under a cross-deputization proposal for the Crow Reservation in Montana. Jurisdiction over crimes would not change. Indian offenders would still be handled by the tribal and federal system and non-Indians by the state. The agreement is being drafted and is supported by Bureau of Indian Affairs law enforcement. The Crow Tribe Legislature, the state, the federal government and two counties would have to sign off. A similar agreement is in place on the Flathead Reservation and the Fort Peck Reservation. Get the Story:
