Store near reservation limits sales of alcohol items

MONDAY, MARCH 31, 2003 A supermarket chain near the Navajo Reservation in New Mexico won't sell hairspray and mouthwash on Sundays because the items are being used to make alcoholic drinks. Alcohol sales are banned on Sundays in Gallup, a town near the reservation. So customers end up buying hairspray or mouthwash to make "ocean water" or "Montana gin." The director of the Na'Nizhoozhi Center, an addiction center that combats alcohol addiction with traditional Navajo teachings, says the Sunday ban is a positive step. Get the Story:
