Campbell 'surprised' by rain dance remark

MONDAY, MARCH 24, 2003 The only American Indian in the Senate was "surprised" that a fellow Republican suggested he do a "rain dance," the Associated Press reports. Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colo.), told the AP he wasn't personally offended by Sen. Bob Bennett remarks. He said colleagues make reference to his Indian heritage all the time. As for Bennett (R-Utah), he said he didn't know that some Indian cultures actually have rain ceremonies and prayers. "I was unaware it was a sacred ritual," he told the AP.
