Basket collection returned to Chehalis Tribes

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2003 A collection of 70 baskets and other items dating to the late 1800s is being returned to the Confederated Chehalis Tribes of Washington. The baskets were given to Dr. Jacob Outwater Van Winkle, who treated Indian patients, by Chehalis and Quinault tribal members. Van Winkle's niece decided to return them after coming into possession of them. The baskets will be displayed on the Chehalis Reservation before being stored at other institutions until the tribe has its own museum. Get the Story:
