Dispute over Senate organization stalls work

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 15, 2003

Republicans and Democrats have not come to an agreement on how to organize the Senate, leaving the chamber in control of the Democrats until the dispute is resolved.

The dispute affects how much money and office space legislative committees receive. Democrats want an agreement similar to the one worked out when they took control of the Senate in summer 2001 but Republicans are asking for a larger share of the money.

In 2001, disagreement over an organization resolution, as it is called, delayed the confirmation of Neal McCaleb as assistant secretary.
