Pombo selection as chairman irks some

FRIDAY, JANUARY 10, 2003 Environmentalists aren't the only ones upset with the selection of Representative Richard Pombo (R-California) as chairman of the House Resources Committee. Rep. Joel Hefley (R-Colo.) told The Denver Post that Pombo was selected over more senior members simply because of his fundraising ability. A spokesperson for the GOP majority leader said that wasn't the "determining factor." Pombo had the sixth lowest seniority of the seven who were vying for the position, the paper reported. Republican newcomers to Resources include Rick Renzi of Arizona, who district includes six reservations, and Tom Cole of Oklahoma. Get the Story:
