Paper seeks recognition for Miami Nation

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 2002 The Indianapolis Star is on a one-paper crusade to help the Miami Nation of Indiana get federal recognition. The paper is running editorials all week to draw attention to the case. After being rejected by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the tribe turned to the courts but lost repeatedly until the Supreme Court earlier this year declined to review an appeal. "In every instance, the courts gave deference to the government's version of the facts," today's editorial states. The tribe is planning to seek legislation to restore its status. Get the Story:
