TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 2002 Ed. Note: The following appears to be a form letter generated by anti-tribal and ani-treaty rights groups. The writer is a frequent critic of tribal rights in his letters to The New London Day of Connecticut. "The issue of Indian sovereignty may create a crisis in Congress of fundamental constitutional rights. According to articles in the Oct. 16 Indian Country Today newspaper, national tribal organizations are proposing a legislative agenda to reverse the unanimous U.S. Supreme Court decisions in Atkinson v. Shirley and Nevada v. Hicks. At issue is the cultural integrity of the Indian tribes that some claim was hurt by recent Supreme Court decisions limiting tribal sovereignty. These organizations are proposing to have Congress pass a law that would make tribal governments and courts superior to state governments and courts by increasing tribal government jurisdiction. . ."
