Momentum is building to restore the population of the rare mountain goat, an animal revered by the Sauk-Suiattle Tribe of Washington.

The tribe traditionally hunted the goat and used its fur, fat, horns, meat and other body parts. But hunts haven't occurred for about 15 years due to a dwindling goat population. About 4,000 remain, according to a tribal official.

The tribe and the goat make their home in the mountains of eastern Washington. The animal isn't rare enough to be listed under the Endangered Species Act.
