Norton promotes forest initiative

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 2002 Secretary of Interior Gale Norton and Secretary of Agriculture Ann Veneman are taking their "Healty Forest Initiative" to Congress. The plan calls for timber companies to thin federal forests to reduce the risk of fires. It also limits appeals to such projects. Norton has chosen Alan K. Fitzsimmons, a former Reagan appointee to the Department of Interior, to be the Wildland Fuels Coordinator for the department. Fitzsimmons will oversee the intiative as it affects the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Bureau of Land Management, Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Park Service. Get the Story:
