Inuits turn hunting into commerce

MONDAY, AUGUST 26, 2002

Inuit hunters in Canada have come up with an ingenious way to preserve their subsistence lifestyle, earn some money and make big game hunters happy.

Inuits are allowed to kill walrus for subsistence purposes. Eight years ago, the Igloolik Hunters and Trappers Organization came up with the idea to set aside part of the quota for commercial hunting excursions.

The trade was approved by the Canadian government. The big game hunters get to keep their trophy but the meat goes to the Inuits. A tour costs about $6,000 to $6,500.
