Tribes ranchers complain about prairie dog

TUESDAY, AUGUST 20, 2002 Tribal officials and ranchers in South Dakota met with Secretary of Interior Gale Norton recently to talk about the black-tailed prairie dog. Critics say the dog is a plentiful menace that has devastated thousands of acres of private land and land on the Pine Ridge and Rosebud Sioux reservations. Interior officials in 2000 said the animal was a "threatened" species. Norton told the group, which included environmentalists, that the department will try to encourage cooperation among affected groups. Get the Story:
