Code Talker inspires athlete grandson

MONDAY, AUGUST 12, 2002 Ira Vandever grew up on the Navajo Reservation in New Mexico and recalls being enthralled by his grandfather's experiences as a Code Talker in World War II. Vandever is now quarterback for Drake University in Iowa but still regards Joe Vandever, 79, as his hero. Joe Vandever was 18 when he joined the Marines before serving as a Code Talker in the war's Pacific theater. Ira is named after Ira Hayes, the Pima man who is in the famous photo of four U.S. soldiers raising the flag at Iwo Jima. Get the Story:
