THURSDAY, JULY 25, 2002 "Looking at Connecticut's involvement in the Eastern Pequot Indian recognition process causes me to wonder what is the difference between our state and Mississippi. The situations are different, but those two states' actions and similarities are remarkable. In Mississippi, there had been the murder of NAACP leader, Medgar Evers, and Byron De La Beckwith was on trial for that murder. The prosecution was spending Mississippi money in an effort to get a conviction. At least that's what we were led to believe. But there also was the Mississippi Sovereignty Commission, another arm of the state of Mississippi, which was making efforts to aid Mr. De La Beckwith's defense. . ." Get the Story:
