Opinion: Tribal colleges a necessity

MONDAY, JULY 22, 2002 "Tribal colleges have, in reality, brought higher education to Indian people. All began as two-year schools but they differ from traditional community colleges because they are charged to rebuild and reinforce traditional tribal culture, while also being careful to provide traditional disciplines that can transfer to four-year baccalaureate colleges, thereby encouraging a continuing education process. The colleges provide personal attention, a family-like atmosphere and strong personal relationships between students and faculty. It is fair to say that tribal colleges have brought higher education to Indian people. . ." Get the Story:
