Opinion: Don't take mascots seriously

TUESDAY, JUNE 18, 2002 "Although some mascots are embarrassing caricatures, they shouldn't be taken so seriously as to cause offense. And it should not be forgotten why so many schools and colleges originally chose Indian symbols - not out of mockery but out of admiration for the qualities of courage, daring and stamina. Once those mascots and nicknames are gone, they will be gone forever; they might not be the most comfortable or sophisticated form of recognition, but it beats being forgotten. . ." Get the Story:
