Consideration of U.S. apology resolution delayed

Consideration of a resolution to apologize to Native peoples for "official depredations and ill-conceived policies" of the United States was delayed on Wednesday.

The Senate Indian Affairs Committee was to take up the measure at a business meeting. But due to a lack of a quorum, Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell (R-Colorado), the panel's chairman, said it would be put off until a later date. Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) was unable to attend the meeting because he was returning from a flight from Hawaii.

The apology, introduced by Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kansas) and co-sponsored by Campbell and Inouye, would offer a formal apology on behalf of the federal government.
