Curtis L. "War Horse" Custalow Sr., former chief of the Mattaponi Tribe of Virginia, died last Thursday at the age of 85.

Custalow led the tribe for two terms, a position held by his father. He helped the tribe gain greater self-control from the state.

The Mattaponi Tribe is one of the oldest state-recognized tribes in the nation. The tribe's 125-acre reservation was set aside in the 1600s.
