MAY 23, 2001

The first of its kind, The Pequot Times, the monthly paper owned by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, is running a special edition on the tribe's land-into-trust dispute.

The May 17 edition includes an editorial by Cedric Woods criticizing Attorney General Richard Blumenthal's battles with the tribe. Blumenthal is suing the Department of Interior for its decision to take 165 acres of land into trust for the Pequot tribe. Blumenthal is also suing over the pending federal recognition petitions of the Eastern Pequot Tribe and the Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribe.

Woods is the tribe's spokesperson but wrote the editorial as a personal piece.
