As the New Mexico Legislature's Redistricting Committee gets ready to redraw the state's political boundaries, tribal leaders are asking lawmakers not to dilute their voting power.

The Jicarilla Apache Nation wants the committee to create a House district where Indians are the majority. The tribe wants to elect its own representative, said the tribe's legislative counsel, Carson Vicenti.

Laguna Pueblo Gov. Harry Early is asking the committee not to dilute the voting power of Indians. Tesuque Pueblo Gov. Charles Dorame said the committee should not split the northern Pueblos into different districts.

The comments from tribal leaders came at a hearing the committee held in Santa Ana Pueblo.

Native Americans are about 9.5 percent of the state's population, the second highest state percentage in the nation.
