In an address to employees on Thursday, Secretary of Interior Gale Norton said it will take some time before all key political appointments in her department are made.

"We have had thousands of resumes for a handful of positions," said Norton. "It will probably be a couple of months before we have all assistant secretaries in place."

Indian Country is eagerly awaiting the naming of the Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs. Although a number of candidates have expressed interest in Kevin Gover's former job, the Bush administration has yet to indicate whom it will choose and when.

A potential lead runner has been Tom Cole, former chief of staff to the Republican National Committee. A member of the Chickasaw Nation of Oklahoma, Cole has been a top money raiser for the GOP and may be rewarded with the position although he has no significant experience in tribal affairs.
