JANUARY 25, 2001

The Senate on Wednesday voted unanimously to confirm Norton Mineta as Secretary of Transportation and Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson as Secretary of Health and Human Services.

Mineta, former Secretary of Commerce under President Clinton, is the first Japanese-American to hold the position. He is the only Democrat in Bush's Cabinet.

Thompson's confirmation means Wisconsin Lt. Governor Scott McCallum will step up to lead the state. He has opposed expansion of Indian gaming just as the Menominee Nation and three Ojibwe tribes are seeking off-reservation casinos and compacts for tribes in the state are beginning to be reviewed pending their expiration in 2003.
