Pequot recognition delayed

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 2001

A federal judge has given the Bureau of Indian Affairs until June 4 to sisue a final determination on the federal recognition of two Pequot tribes.

U.S. District Court Judge Alfred Covello had orginally told Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb to decide by the end of the year. But McCaleb said he wouldn't be able to do so, given the large amounts of documentation it received from the Eastern Pequot Tribe and Paucatuck Eastern Pequot Tribe.

Former Assistant Secretary Kevin Gover extended preliminary recognition to the tribe in March 2000. A court stepped into the dispute after the state of Connecticut filed a lawsuit against the BIA.

The state and three towns oppose the tribes receiving recognition.
