MONDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2001 Notices of Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb's reversal of two recognition decisions made during the final hours of the Clinton administration are published in today's issue of the Federal Register. The first notice reports McCaleb's proposal not to acknowledge that the Duwamish Tribal Organization of Washington as an Indian tribe. Following recommendations made by his staff, McCaleb finds that the Duwamish failed to satisfy three out of seven mandatory recognition criteria. The second is a proposal not to acknolwedge the Nipmuc Nation of Massachusetts as an Indian tribe. The petitioning group failed to satisfy four out of seven recognition criteria, McCaleb has found. A third notice also published today affirms an earlier decision not to acknowledge the Webster/Dudley Band of Chaubunagungamaug Nipmuck Indians. McCaleb has found the petitioning group did not satisfy three out of seven criteria. McCaleb signed off on all three documents last Wednesday.
