Bush delaying uranium payments

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 29, 2001

The Bush administration plans to delay paying victims of uranium exposure money they are owed while it completes three studies. The delay could last up to a year.

The administration is concerned that some workers might not actually qualify for compensation. Studies are examining if uranium actually caused some workers to become sick.

Many of those who were exposed to uranium radiation were Navajos who worked in mines in the Four Corners. Many have died before seeing compensation because money has run out.

Sen. Pete Domenici (R-N.M.), who has introduced bills to many of the works get paid, plans to fight the delay, said an aide.
