JUNE 20, 2001 The Department of Justice is looking to settle the federal government's tobacco lawsuit, worried that it could be weakened if pursued. Department of Justice officials said yesterday that Attorney General John Ashcroft has already informed lawmakers of the move towards a settlement. As a Senator, Ashcroft opposed the lawsuit.
