Citing unnamed sources, The Washington Post today reports that Secretary of Interior Gale Norton will shelve a plan to reintroduce wild grizzly bears into mountains of Idaho and western Montana, also known as the Bitterroot Mountains.

The plan was announced by the Clinton administration in November. Starting off with 25, it intends to increase the threatened population to 280, but that may take up to 100 years since bears have a very slow reproductive rate.

Citing safety concerns, Idaho Governor Dick Kempthorne has since sued to stop implementation and Republican lawmakers have voiced objections. A citizens panel was to help oversee the plan, including a representative from the Nez Perce Tribe.

The proposed fiscal year 2002 budget has funds for bear management, but none for the Bitterroot area.
