Pueblo water usage questioned

Pojoaque Pueblo in northern New Mexico may be using too much water for its 18-hole golf course, said the state engineer.

As a result, Tom Turney says he is considering action against the Pueblo. What he might do is unknown, but he says he has received complaints about the tribe's usage.

The tribe and others in the area are locked in a water rights battle dating back to the 1950s. A regional water system could alleviate water concerns.

A federal judge overseeing the lawsuit earlier this year said the Pueblo was only entitled to the amount of water based on its historic use and not its current, and future, needs.
