MAY 15, 2001

Three groups in Alaska on Monday proposed public high schools in Anchorage be required to teach a course on Alaska Native cultures and history.

The Humanities Forum, the Alaska Native Heritage Center, and the Bridge Builders, a multicultural group, brought the proposal in response to the recent paint-ball attacks on Alaska Natives in the city. Two high school students have been implicated in the incident and were kicked out of school.

A third is facing misdemeanor assualt charges for the January incident in which the three White youth videotaped themselves shooting a paint-ball gun at Natives.
