APRIL 16, 2001 The United States Commission on Civil Rights on Friday condemned the use of American Indians as mascots, logos, and nicknames at schools and universities. The Commission's action has no legal bearing. Mascot opponents, however, said it will help force schools to reconsider the use of American Indian stereotypes. Some school officials aren't convinced. They say it should be up to local communities to decide on the appropriate use of Indians as mascots. The Commission said the use of the names might violate anti-discrimination laws.
