Pueblo school improves testing

The public school on the San Juan Pueblo Reservation in northern New Mexico improved its ranking on the state's accountability list, going from "probationary" last year to meeting standards this year.

But that may not help the rest of the schools in the Española Public School District, of which San Juan is a part. Thirteen schools in the district ranked probationary, and as a result, could be taken over by the state.

Of schools who fared the worst on the state Department of Education list, many are located on or near the state's Pueblos and the Navajo Nation.

Frank Fastwolf, principal of the public school at Santo Domingo Pueblo believes language of students plays a role in the rankings, which are linked to test scores.
