The town of Ignacio, Colorado, has joined the Southern Ute Tribe in recognizing the achievements of Leonard C. Burch.

Burch was the youngest person to lead the tribe. He served as chairman from 1966 through 2002, a time of unprecedented growth on the reservation.

"He was a leader and visionary and inspired many people as chairman," Mayor Stella Cox of Ignacio told The Pine River Times.

Burch passed away in August 2003 at the age of 69 and the tribe established December 10 in his honor. The town board passed a resolution on January 20 to recognize Leonard C. Burch Day in the community.
