The Colville Tribes of Washington are investigating the death of a rare owl on the reservation.

The northern hawk-owl was found hanging from a tree after it was apparently shot, KING5 News reported. The bird attracted significant attention because it is rarely seen outside of Alaska or Canada.

"This bird appears to have been shot. His talons were still hanging onto the branch," Jon Houghton, an experienced bird-watcher, told the station.

The owl had apparently been roosting on private property on the reservation. It is a protected species under federal law.
