Indianz.Com SoundCloud: House Subcommittee on Indian, Insular and Alaska Native Affairs Legislative Hearing November 4, 2015

The House Subcommittee on Indian, Insular and Alaska Native Affairs heard testimony on three tribal bills on Wednesday.

None of the measures drew any controversy or opposition at the hearing, which lasted less than 40 minutes. All three bills have bipartisan support and support from the Obama administration.

Two of the bills are tribe specific. H.R.2009, the Pascua Yaqui Tribe Land Conveyance Act, places about 40 acres in trust for the Pascua Yaqui Tribe of Arizona. H.R.3079, places about 80 acres trust for the Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians in California.

H.R.3079 also has a companion in the Senate that's gaining traction. The Senate Indian Affairs Committee approved S.1822 at a business meeting last month.

The third bill is H.R.2719, the Tribal Coastal Resiliency Act, carries a wider impact. The bill authorizes $5 million every in grants to tribes to help them address climate change, erosion and other impacts on their coastal areas.
