The House Subcommittee on Indian, Insular and Alaska Native Affairs holds a hearing this morning on three tribal and Alaska Native bills. Two of the bills benefit tribes in California. H.R.1157, the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Mission Indians Land Transfer Act of 2015, places about 1,400 acres in trust for the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians. Local opposition in Santa Barbara County is strong. The second bill is H.R.2538, the Lytton Rancheria Homelands Act of 2015, which places about 940 acres in trust for the Lytton Band of Pomo Indians. The tribe has reached an agreement with Sonoma County to address land use, taxation and other issues. The third measure on the agenda is H.R.2386, the Unrecognized Southeast Alaska Native Communities Recognition and Compensation Act. The bill reopens the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act to address certain villages that were excluded from the 1971 law. The hearing takes place at 11am in Room 1324 of the Longworth House Office Building and it will be webcast. The witness list follows:
