The Interior Department submitted 175 pages of tribal opposition letters to the State Department as part of a review of the controversial Keystone XL Pipeline. Tribes and tribal organizations expressed near unanimous opposition to the project, The Hill reported. But the newspaper pointed out that DOI -- as a trustee for Indian Country -- has not made public its own comments on the pipeline. As part of the Keystone review process, the State Department is required to consult with other agencies like DOI. The federal agency comments were due February 2, The Hill reported. DOI “encouraged the State Department to give appropriate consideration to comments previously submitted during the Keystone XL permit review process as well as concerns expressed by some tribes in Indian Country about the project," a spokesperson told the paper. Tribes oppose the pipeline due to concerns about its impact on water sources, sacred sites, the environment and treaty lands. Get the Story:
