Navajo Nation Council considers funding for presidential election

The Navajo Nation Council is meeting in a special session today to consider funding for the tribe's delayed presidential election.

Legislation No. 0010-15 authorizes nearly $318,000 for the April 21 vote. Joe Shirley Jr., a former president, is due to face Russell Begaye for the tribe's top position.

The election has been in limbo since November due to the removal of one candidate who didn't meet the Navajo language requirements. Lawmakers passed a bill to start an entirely new process but the Navajo Nation Supreme Court said the vote must proceed as originally envisioned.

President Ben Shelly has remained in office as a result of the delay. He came in seventh in last year's primary but was sworn in for a new term in January.
