Critics of the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians in California don't think the tribe's land-into-trust bill will get very far.

Rep. Doug LaMalfa (R-California), whose district does not include the reservation, introduce H.R.1157 to place 1,400 acres in trust for the tribe. A prior version of the bill failed to advance in the last session of Congress.

"The last time he tried this, it didn’t go any place,” Santa Barbara County supervisor Doreen Farr told The Santa Barbara Independent. “I don’t think that was accidental.”

Rep. Lois Capps (D-California), whose district includes the reservation, opposes the measure. She believes the tribe should work out its issues with the county.

The county is planning to fight the Bureau of Indian Affairs if it issues a final decision on the tribe's land-into-trust application. An environmental assessment resulted in a finding of no significant impact.

The tribe plans to use the site for housing.
