Richard Jenks Jr., a former council member for the Ute Tribe of Utah, has been indicted on sexual abuse charges.

Jenks, 58, faces two counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child within Indian Country and two counts of sexual abuse of a minor within Indian Country, according to the indictment. He's being accused of abusing a girl over a six-year period, from 2009 through 2014.

The federal charges come after Jenks was charged in tribal court with similar crimes. The tribal case, however, is expected to be dismissed so that prosecutors can focus on the federal case, KSL reported.

Jenks was first elected to the council in 2003. His most recent term ended in 2013.
