Matthew Wesaw, a member of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians, has been appointed to the Michigan Advisory Committee of the United States Civil Rights Commission.

Wesaw, the former chairman of his tribe, will serve on the committee for two years. He will advise the commission on civil rights issues in Michigan.

“Michigan has a long, proud tradition of being a leader in civil rights,” Wesaw said in a press release. “I look forward to joining with other state leaders to continue to advocate fairness, equality and justice for all people.”

Wesaw currently serves as director of the Michigan Department of Civil Rights.
