Members of the Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota voted nearly a year ago to legalize alcohol sales but plans remain in limbo. Opponents fought the referendum in tribal court but their case appears to have failed. It now looks like the tribal council will finally decide how to proceed with the sales. Except for a brief period in 1970, the Pine Ridge Reservation has been dry since its creation in 1889. Most other tribes in South Dakota allow liquor, although its sale is typically restricted.
